Science in the Southern and Spanish Netherlands flourished in the sixteenth century, whereas the hey-day of science in the Northern Netherlands (or the Dutch Republic) took place from the mid-seventeenth century onwards. The massive migration from South to North, especially after the fall of Antwerp in 1585, is seen as the link between those two periods of prosperity. Scientific progress in the North was only possible at the cost of scientific decline in the South. At least this is the traditional hypothesis, which can be summed up as ‘continuity-in-a-more-suitable-environment’. This view is to be found in the historiography from the nineteenth century onwards up until the present day. Although the traditional view is highly probable, in this article we have tried to unravel and modify it. For the most part, we have targeted our adjustments to coincide with the so-called periods of rise and decline. Firstly, the decline in the Spanish Netherlands did not start immediately after the fall of Antwerp and secondly, there is not much continuity to be found between the times of prosperity in the two areas.

The historiography of the persecution of the Jews in the Netherlands is an excellent example of the dialectics of progress. Soon after 1945, and even sooner than in the surrounding countries, a series of studies on this subject was readily available in the Netherlands in the form of the monumental historiographies of Herzberg, Presser and De Jong. However, during the 1970s, the production of new studies that examined the persecution of the Jews practically ground to a halt. It was only after the 1980s that a new generation of historians emerged who no longer sketched an all-encompassing perspective for the general public but instead applied themselves to thorough empirical studies written in a detached style for a small specialised audience. As a result of this, the historiography of the Holocaust has radically altered in terms of perspective, methodology and function. This article examines what these recent studies of the Holocaust have accomplished. If scientific progress is defined in terms of increased accuracy, analytical thoroughness, and scientific and societal relevance then the study of the Holocaust has certainly achieved this with regard to the first two criteria. However, it is still the case that the persecution of the Jews in the Netherlands is poorly represented at international debates and the implications of these studies of the Holocaust in the context of the history of Europe have hardly been examined at all. The relevance of a lot of the recent work is undisputed from a historiographical perspective. Yet, as a contribution to the image of the Holocaust outside the walls of Academia, the recent historiography has had less success.

Waterstad in stedenland, a history of the Hoogheemraadschap Rijnland before 1857, is a fine example of the ‘new hydraulic history’. By drawing information from a broad range of sources, employing an explicitly ecological approach, and imbedding their work in the social, economic, and political history of the period they cover, Milja van Tielhof and Petra J.E.M. van Dam have produced a well-researched, clearly-written, and attractive volume that is a worthy successor to Fockema Andreae’s classic study of nearly 75 years ago.

This review of Waterstaat in stedenland. Het hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland voor 1857 (Utrecht, 2006) by Milja van Tielhof and Petra van Dam, raises the question: ‘To what extent does this study of the Netherland’s most important polder area confirm two important theses in Dutch history’?. It concludes that the book confirms the idea of Holland as an early commercial society. On the other hand, it finds little evidence in the book to support the idea that Holland was an early democratic society in which farmers were regularly consulted about important decisions that directly affected their own lives. The Rijnland Water Board was, in fact, completely dominated by noble families and members of the urban elite who together managed to overcome the challenges of collective action in a very large area.

In the past as well as today, flooding and other water-related problems cannot be explained by isolating the physical dynamics of the landscape or the technological and institutional failure of society. In their innovative synthesis on the ancien régime water board of Rijnland, Milja van Tielhof and Petra van Dam are able to link continuing drainage and flooding problems as well as the – controlled – extension of lakes in the peat area and the apparent inability of the water board to adopt proper solutions, to economic choices with specific social consequences. This way, the authors of Waterstaat in stedenland, show us that the history of water boards remains a vital issue in the environmental history of the Low Countries.

Waterstaat in stedenland is a scholarly monograph that aims to be a ‘green and contextual history of water management’. The authors focus on long-term developments with regard to managing the quantity and quality of water, the landscape, the economy and institutions while using a multidisciplinary approach. This broad history of the Dutch Rijnland area spans almost a thousand years (ca. 900-1856). At the heart of the study are questions that are relevant for environmental historians. The man-made and natural causes, and consequences, of various changes in the relationship between mankind and water are described in detail. The authors expand upon this position further in their ‘Reply’ and explore the effectiveness of the peat policies within the framework of the tensions between government and market forces. Recommendations for future research areas are also provided.

The 400th anniversary of Rembrandt’s birth was celebrated with exhibitions and other activities. Compared to the previous celebration, the commercial aspects were strikingly evident. Various interpretations of Rembrandt’s work were presented; here they are considered from a historian’s point of view. To what extent did art historians incorporate historical aspects of Rembrandt’s life into their opinions? Many a book published on the occasion of an exhibition contained articles about art history but rarely a catalogue of the works on display. A few authors ventured to present historical interpretations, most of them marred by suggestiveness and/or faulty chronology. In more historically oriented publications efforts were made to present new facts. Did Rembrandt disclose his opinion on the religious quarrels in the United Provinces in his early paintings? Rembrandt’s presupposed intimate knowledge of Jews and Jewish life is now doubted. One thing is certain: the study of the clothes worn by those represented in Rembrandt’s works did lead to new findings about the artist’s intentions.
